ABOUT THE TOWER
A spectacular 21.5 meters high wooden observation tower Brestovec - Poľana stands on the edge of the grove in the picturesque village of Brestovec. It was built in 2009 at an altitude of 580 meters. The tower has 137 steps and its viewing platform is 20 meters above the ground. The platform is secured with sixteen wire ropes, thus making it safe even in the windy weather, although it slightly wobbles.
When the weather is nice, visitors can see the White Carpathiansw, Myjava hills, Little Carpathians, Považský Inovec, Tribeč, Vtáčnik and Strážov mountains, Veľká Javorina, Inovec, Strážov, Mahár, Branč castle, Záruby and Ostrý vrch with a wind farm.
The road towards the tower leads from Myjava through Vrbovce to Brestovec. After climbing a steep hill in Brestovec turn to Poľana and after one and a half kilometers there is a bus stop. From there it is only 500 meters long walk to the tower.
ON RAILS OF ŠTEFÁNIK’S TUNNEL
On the rails between Veselí nad Moravou and Nové Mesto nad Váhom, between stations Vrbovce and Brestovec there is a historically significant tunnel – The tunnel of General M.R. Štefánik. Passing through this tunnel is a really unique experience not only for rail enthusiasts. Poľana has witnessed the story of the difficult and at the time revolutionary construction of this tunnel. The construction works started in 1923 and lasted four years. It took 1,443 workers to build the tunnel and six of them lost their lives during the construction. A monument standing in front of Brestovec station is a reminder of their sacrifice. At the time of its construction it was the longest tunnel in Czechoslovakia (2,422.9 m. long).
Poľana now boasts with the works of human hands - a tunnel which she protects in its heart and the tower Brestovec which she carries on her head like a crown.
